Creating Your Vision Board

Everyday life is full of highs and lows. Ultimately, it is up to each of us to make ourselves a priority, and to move forward with a focus on what we want in life. The first person we disappoint or let down is usually our self. We often put others first, sometimes because we love them and sometimes out of obligation. Other times, we become overcome with emotions or situations that make us lose sight of our vision.

A vision board can be a powerful tool in focusing back on ourselves and motivating us to strive toward our goals.

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a visual tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal.

Take photos, magazines, craft supplies, and/or quotes that align with your goal. Cut out and paste them to a poster board. A flower you love, a place you want to see, an activity you hope to do, a positive saying that resonates with you, a “before photo” that reminds you how far you’ve come. Your board is for you – nobody else needs to understand it!

When looking ahead, it is vital to set smaller goals that lead toward your greater goals and dreams. Smaller goals help us focus and put goals that feel unattainable within our reach. Each small goal is a victory, and each victory is a step. With every achievement, you create a staircase directly to your dreams, and you can simply walk right up them.

Recognize the progress that comes with setting smaller goals. Progress can be measured by the scale, but remember – your weight is just a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That’s it. It cannot measure your pants getting too big, your energy increasing, your health improving, or your mindset evolving.

If you need some help focusing in on your goal for your vision board, try this visualization exercise:

Close your eyes. Take a moment and think about a time in your life that you felt happy. A time you felt excited, fearless and proud. Ask yourself:

  • What is/was my motivation?
  • Who is my motivation?
  • Why am I here?
  • What does the end of my journey look like?
  • What have I accomplished to get here?
  • What are some of my goals?

During low times, when you feel most likely to let yourself down, pause and spend 5 minutes looking at your board, the vision that inspires you. Remind yourself that you deserve this, for both yourself and your loved ones. Flood your mind and your heart with how much you want to achieve your goals and dreams. Pull yourself back in as a priority.

Then put these positive feelings into action!
