Progress, not Perfection: The Spirituality of Weight Loss

person peacefully meditating on mountain

If we look at ourselves holistically, we find we are mind, body and spirit.  Often we focus on mind and body with weight loss, but our spiritual side can also be accessed to get where we want to go.  Spirituality is about finding meaning in life and connecting to the deeper parts of ourselves.  If we can find this connection we can keep an honest perspective on why we want to be at our best and how to do so.

For some of us spirituality has been connected to guilt, the sense we haven’t measured up as we attempt to keep our body as a temple.  But spiritual principles such as forgiveness, self-care, and loving ourselves and others can help us work through the guilt, shame and isolation we sometimes feel.  With these principles our goals don’t need to be a shame-based perfection but a freedom to embrace a steady progress towards where we want to be.

At our support group topic on July 19th, 2016 – we discussed a book that we recommended reading called, “Addiction and Grace” by Dr. Gerald May.
