Obalon® Weight Loss Balloon

About the Obalon® Weight Loss Balloon

Are you struggling to lose weight? Are you frustrated because diet and exercise alone are not working for you? If you have the will to lose weight, but not the way, we have another weight loss treatment option for you to consider. The Obalon Balloon System is the first and only swallowable, non-surgical, FDA-approved gastric balloon for weight loss, and Eviva is the first bariatric practice in the Northwest to offer Obalon to our patients. With the Obalon gastric balloon, we have a treatment option for adult patients who are 30 to 100 pounds overweight and have tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise.

Obalon Procedure

Placement of the weight loss balloons typically takes less than 10 minutes at each appointment and does not require sedation. Following your initial consultation at any one of our locations, your placement will occur in our three locations in Western Washington. You swallow a capsule containing a small balloon and then the balloon is inflated. In the clinical study, most patients returned to normal activities with no downtime. Three lightweight and buoyant gastric balloons are placed gradually over 3 months to maximize patient tolerability and facilitate progressive weight loss throughout the 6-month treatment period. At the end of the 6-month treatment period, all three balloons are removed in a brief, approximately 15-minute, outpatient endoscopic procedure.

Obalon Results

In a large clinical study, the Obalon Balloon System was shown to help adults experience clinically meaningful weight loss. Patients lost twice as much weight as diet and exercise alone. Six months after the balloons were removed, 89 percent of the weight lost was kept off when combined with diet and exercise. At Eviva, we have a medical weight loss program designed to help people maintain weight loss after the removal of gastric balloons.

In the clinical trial, the majority of adverse events were reported as mild. They consisted of abdominal pain and nausea which typically resolve within two weeks (serious side effects were less than 0.3%). You can find this information and a complete list of contraindications, warnings, and precautions on the Obalon website.

Eviva is the first bariatric practice in the Northwest to carry the Obalon Balloon System.
