Obalon® Gastric Balloon

Obalon® Weight Loss Balloon

About Obalon® Weight Loss Balloon

If you’ve been struggling with weight loss, and diet and exercise alone have not been able to get you there, gastric balloon placement could be a viable option for you. The Obalon Balloon System is the first and only swallowable, non-surgical, FDA-approved gastric balloon for weight loss. Eviva places more Obalon gastric balloons than any other clinic in the Pacific Northwest. If you are looking to lose 30 pounds or more, this procedure may be the right one for you.

Obalon Procedure

Placement of the weight loss balloons typically takes less than 10 minutes at each appointment and does not require sedation. You swallow a capsule containing a small balloon and then the balloon is inflated. In the clinical study, most patients returned to normal activities with no downtime. Three lightweight and buoyant gastric balloons are placed gradually over 3 months to maximize patient tolerability and facilitate progressive weight loss throughout the 6-month treatment period. At the end of the 6-month treatment period, all three balloons are removed in a brief, approximately 15-minute, outpatient endoscopic procedure.

The Obalon Balloon System is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40 kg/m2 (30 to 50 pounds overweight) willing to follow a diet and exercise program. All Obalon balloons must be removed in 6 months. Patients with prior weight loss surgeries are not eligible. The most common side effects reported were mild abdominal pain and nausea which typically resolved within two weeks. You must take daily acid-blocking medicine prescribed by your doctor. For full Important Safety Information go to www.Obalon.com/safety-information or call your doctor.

Obalon Results

In a large clinical study, the Obalon Balloon System was shown to help adults experience clinically meaningful weight loss. Patients lost twice as much weight as diet and exercise alone. Six months after the balloons were removed, 89 percent of the weight lost was kept off when combined with diet and exercise. At Eviva, we offer a medical weight loss program designed to help people maintain weight loss after the removal of gastric balloons.

This is repetitive of the Obalon disclaimer above

In a clinical trial, the majority of adverse events were reported as mild. They consisted of abdominal pain and nausea which typically resolve within two weeks (serious side effects were less than 0.3%). You can find this information and a complete list of contraindications, warnings, and precautions on the Obalon website.

Where to Start

Eviva provides a variety of different weight loss services designed to allow your body to combat excessive weight. These services range from non-surgical to surgical weight loss. Meet with one of our Board-Certified doctors for an Initial Bariatric Consultation in order to find the right solution for you.

Meeting directly with a doctor is a very important step and one that is commonly overlooked by many practices. The primary reason, only doctors are licensed to give medical advice. Your Eviva doctor will look very carefully at your medical history, family history, and any prescriptions you may currently be taking. They will identify co-morbidities you are at risk for as well as review other health problems you may currently be suffering from, due to excess weight. Your doctor will discuss your goals for how much weight you want or need to lose. They will also review the different surgical and non-surgical options, answer questions, and help develop a tailored plan that takes into consideration your unique situation and goals.

From there you will meet with your Bariatric Pathway Coordinator who will showcase your personalized journey for you. They will go over each step of the process including goals, overview of your insurance benefits, and potential financing options, etc. (Note: gastric balloon placement is currently not covered by insurance).
