How to give yourself an GLP-1 injection
Refills
If your medication has refills remaining, please contact your pharmacy to refill.
If there are no refills remaining, please use the Patient Portal or Healow app (iOS, Android) to request a refill with your provider.
Insurance & Prior Authorizations
If you are using insurance to pay for your GLP-1 medication, your insurance company may require a prior authorization (PA) before they will consider covering the medication.
How the Prior Authorization Process Works
- Your prescription is sent to your pharmacy.
- The pharmacy processes the prescription through your insurance.
- Your insurance determines whether a PA is required.
- If a prior authorization is needed, your pharmacy will initiate the PA request and send the required provider portion to our office.
- Our office completes the provider portion.
- Please allow 7–10 business days from the date our office receives the PA request/paperwork from your pharmacy for us to complete our portion. For updates on the PA status, please contact your insurance directly.
- Your insurance makes the final decision.
- After the PA is submitted, your insurance company reviews the request and determines whether the medication will be approved or denied.
Important:
- Our office cannot begin the prior authorization until we receive the necessary request or paperwork from your pharmacy.
- If you are switching to a different GLP-1 medication, a new prior authorization may be required. This process may take longer than the initial PA, depending on your insurance requirements.
- Coverage requirements vary by insurance plan. If you have questions about your medication benefits, coverage requirements, or the status of an authorization after it has been submitted, please contact your insurance company directly using the phone number on the back of your insurance card.
