Ways to take your workout outside this summer.​

Want to keep up your fitness but tired of the gym or same ol’ thing? Use the world as your Gym; Catch some rays this summer and get your workout in at the same time, but don’t forget your sunscreen! Here are some easy ideas to help keep pushing your fitness to the next level.

Try out a new trail

Take your workout off the treadmill and introduce some new terrain. Walking trails has the added benefit of helping your balance and coordination as well as provides great scenery. Don’t forget about paved paths, take your bike for a spin around the lake or your neighborhood.

Pro Tip: Take a water bottle or hydration pack ensure you get your fluids. Also, check to see if you need a parking pass or park permit before going out to hike local trails. Some ways to try out trails include:

  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Jogging
  • Roller Blading
  • Geocaching
  • Walk a golf or archery course or take a stroll at the zoo

Cool down by the water

Whether it’s a lake, pond, or the sea there are plenty of water activities to keep you cool and help you beat the heat as well as stay fit and active. Try going for a swim, renting a kayak, or learn a new skill like sailing or rowing while enhancing you fitness!

Take it to the park

With group classes moving outside during the summer, you should too! This is a great opportunity to keep up your exercise class routine with a fun change in scenery. Other ideas at the park include:

  • Jog with your dog
  • Yoga in the park
  • Do a YouTube workout outside from your phone or tablet
  • Find an outdoor climbing facility- for both endurance and strength
  • Work out in the park

Park bench workout- 3 sets of 10 reps of:

  1. Push ups off the bench
  2. Squats on the bench
  3. Plank off bench
  4. Bench dips
  5. Step ups on bench
  6. Side plank off bench

Play a game

Gather some friends or family members and play a game of pick-up basketball at the courts. Volleyball, basketball, and tennis are all fun ways to get fit with others. Some other fun and competitive activities to get your heart rate up include:
